5 Sure Signs You’re a Couple

You know that awkward transition stage between love and friendship? It’s more complicated than you think. On one hand, there’s no doubt in other people’s minds that you’re a couple. On the other hand, you haven’t formally embraced your couple-hood, and this fact is making things more uncomfortable.

Before you start second guessing your relationship status, and before you even think of asking your special friend the question, “are we…?”, consider these 5 sure signs you’re a couple.

1. Favorite Food – The number one sign of couple-hood is knowing what foodstuff your special friend hates and loves. This ’skill’ is acquired after a long time of going on dates.

2. People don’t bother sending you separate invites – Being a couple actually helps your friends budget for their wedding invites. They just need to send you one!

3. You have a song. – You might not have planned on choosing a song for your relationship, but there’s always one that will remind you of a special memory. The more romantic partner dreams of walking down the aisle with that song playing in the background.

4. Your friends think you share a cell phone. – You’ve had people call you in the middle of the night asking about the other person. People also get confused when you say you’re not together.

5. Your “break up” becomes the talk of the town. No matter how many times you insist that you’re not ‘technically’ a couple, people still feel sad when you break up. So sad that they go out of their way to talk about your relationship when you’re not around. Your common friends, in particular, feel compelled to take sides when you ’split up’.

If you’re friends with benefits with someone, and you don’t know what to call your relationship, just think of this cliche: if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Some relationships that start out this way last longer than other ‘named’ relationships (boyfriend-girlfriend, etc). The key is to focus on the ‘friendship’ part rather than the ‘benefits’.
