Friday and Saturday morning TV reports tell us that 8 people perished and more than a hundred were hurt in the Makati Bombing that occurred in Friday noontime. However, Saturday evening news report that yet another body was found in the site; trapped in the debris of the collapsed escalator. The report also said that many people are still missing.

Update: I just heard that 2 more have been confirmed dead in this incident.

I viewed this report on the bus, on my way to Seaside to attend a guild dinner. The body was mangled beyond recognition and I was not able to get all the details in further news that night. The news report at GMA-7 also showed videos of grieving families flocking to the site and the hospitals to look for missing friends and relatives.

One man, the father of a 17-year-old girl who died in the bombing while shopping at Glorietta, is a retired police officer. In his television statement (with GMA’s Jessica Soho), he said, “napakarami kong natulungang tao noon, pero ung sarili kong anak hindi ko man lang natulungan nung mamatay sya (I helped so many people in the past, yet I wasn’t able to help my own child at the time of her death)”. He also issued an enraged challenge to the bombers, “sa nagtanim ng bomba, mag-one on one na lang tayo (to the one who planted the bomb, I challenge you to fight me one on one).”

The mother of a Glorietta employee also talks of her son, who also perished in the bombing, and how he was the breadwinner of their family.

I was reflecting on the different people who died or were hurt in the tragedy. I’m guessing that most of them would be parents who were looking for discounts in the kids’ stores in Glorietta 2, teenagers who were browsing the selections of hair and other fashionable accessories, and office employees on their way out of the mall to the bus and jeepney terminals in parksquare.
