Review of the Theme: Kukote in a Jar

Kukote in a Jar is a creation of a fellow filipino named macuha. I like this theme because the image at the right stays with the reader even after scrolling down.

This theme is perfect for a story-type blog. You can simply put the chapter/episode numbers at the sidebar on the right as categories and the reader can focus on the writing more than the image (which is a static one). Loading-wise this also works as the only image that will load is the background one, if your blog is all-text type that is.

The tip: don’t put any image on your posts that could compete with the background image. Make sure that the background image is an all-encompasing one for all the topics in your blog. Also, keep the text in your image minimal so it won’t compete with the text in the blog body.

This theme is also perfect for text potfolios and resumes. Simply use the different aspects of the biodata as categories, and your own photograph as background image. Cool!

I have forgotten you, but my heart still feels you

For everyone who has loved and lost that love, rediscovering the memories is like remembering that dream that ended in a vague but memorable note. Why is it that we touch some people only once but they remain with us forever? Is there a way to insulate ourselves from these people who affect us ever so deeply, but subtlely, that we only discover their value after we lose them?

I don’t know which truth is harder to bear: to know that you almost kept that person with you forever or to be happy that the he/she left you with just a haunting memory and did not stay long enough to really hurt you.

If you have ever been almost totally in love with a person, this excerpt of P. Neruda’s poem is for you:

I have forgotten your voice, your happy voice; I have forgotten
your eyes.

Like a flower to its perfume, I am bound to my vague memory of
you. I live with pain that is like a wound; if you touch me, you will
do me irreparable harm.

Your caresses enfold me, like climbing vines on melancholy walls.
I have forgotten your love, yet I seem to glimpse you in every
window.

We keep those we almost loved in our hearts where they belong, along with the sadness of what could have been.

Raving over Mandigo Theme for Wordpress

So far my all-time favorite theme is Mandigo

Why?

  • It’s the most user friendly of all the themes I have tested (and that’s a lot)
  • Customizing is so easy, particularly color scheme planning
  • Perfect for people who want a different look for their blogs all the time, depending on their moods
  • It’s widget ready and there are 4 sidebars! Including a top side bar that is positioned over the posts.

There’s more!

You know those tracking thingies that technorati or other blog aggregators ask you to place on your blogs’ html?

Yes, THOSE! While techies will undoubtedly insert those scripts in less than a few seconds, non-techies will slave over the positioning for hours, so afraid of placing the tags in places. One wrong move and the whole thing is destroyed.

With Mandigo, there’s a menu part in the presentation where you can just paste the java/html tags without worrying about positioning. Your choices are “head”, “body” or “footer”. Just paste!

Isn’t this theme great? TRY IT!!!

Blogspot: The One-minute Blog

The easiest way to have a blog is to sign up in a blog publisher and simply use the tools available there:

Blogspot. Google’s own blog publishing.

Why it’s great? No need to worry about plug ins and widgets and lay outs. Everything is in a simple menu that you can play around with, including colors, layout and others.

Even the adsense (google) placement is very easy. No need to think too much about placing the script, just get your publisher ID from your google adsense account and voila! There’s a special place in the layout for google ads.

If you prefer to manually place the html codes (example for google analytics or adsense, or any tracking script), there is a simple pop up where you can place the html tags.

Very easy!

The downside? Site name identity. Your site will forever be “<yourname>.blogspot.com”, the same as multitudes of sites in the net that are hosted by blogspot. If this doesn’t matter to you, well and good. Blogspot is the place for you.

However, if you do want your own name, or want to be hosted by a blog site that feels more right for your blog topic (e.g. woobie.pinoygaming.net, because my blog topic is gaming)… then self hosted wordpress is the way to go. I’ll discuss that in a new post.
